About University of Delaware

Overview & History

One of the oldest institutions in the United States, the University of Delaware traces its beginnings to 1743 when a petition from the Presbytery of Lewes highlighting the need for a well-educated clergy inspired the Rev. Dr. Francis Alison to establish a school in New London, Pennsylvania.

Historian John Munroe wrote that Alison’s first class was “perhaps the most distinguished group, considering the later accomplishments of its members as a whole, of any class in any school in America.”

Those early students later became influential leaders — statesmen, physicians, merchants and scholars. Thomas McKean, George Read and James Smith signed the Declaration of Independence, while Read also signed the U.S. Constitution.

By 1765, Alison’s academy moved to Newark. NewArk College launched as a degree-granting school in 1834 and was renamed Delaware College in 1843. In 1867, the institution was identified as one of the country’s historic Land Grant colleges.

A women’s college opened in 1914 with 58 students, and in 1921, the two colleges merged to form the University of Delaware.

Since 1950, UD has increased its enrollment fourfold and significantly broadened its faculty, academic programs and global impact.

In 2009, the University acquired a 272-acre property next to the Newark campus that once housed a Chrysler Plant. Today, that land—now the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus—hosts the University’s Health Sciences Complex and is being developed as a hub for business, research, education and more.
