About Memorial University

Overview & History

Memorial University of Newfoundland was established in 1925 as a living memorial to the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who lost their lives in World War I. Its roots date back to 1893, when the Council of Higher Education envisioned a “University of Newfoundland.” Economic and political challenges delayed progress, but a pivotal change in 1913 — requiring students to complete two years of university to qualify for the Rhodes Scholarship — reignited efforts to create a local institution. After World War I’s devastating impact on the province, the desire to commemorate the fallen led to the founding of Memorial University College. Initially a junior college, it symbolized both remembrance and hope for the future. Today, Memorial University stands as a leading institution committed to academic excellence, research, and public service.
