Kosovo - At a Glance

Overview & History

Kosovo is a landlocked country in Southeast Europe, situated in the central Balkans. It shares borders with Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia. With a population of about 1.8 million people, the majority are ethnic Albanians, alongside Serbs and smaller minority groups. Pristina serves as the capital and largest city. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008, and since then it has been recognized by over 100 countries, though not universally, as Serbia and several other nations still dispute its statehood.

Historically, Kosovo has been at the crossroads of various civilizations. In ancient times, it was inhabited by Illyrian and Dardanian tribes before becoming part of the Roman and later Byzantine Empires. During the Middle Ages, it was a core region of the Serbian medieval state, with the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389 marking a turning point against Ottoman expansion. The Ottomans ruled Kosovo for centuries, leaving significant cultural and religious influences.

In the 20th century, Kosovo became part of Yugoslavia, later experiencing ethnic tensions and conflicts during the 1990s. Following NATO intervention in 1999, Kosovo was placed under UN administration until its independence in 2008. Today, it continues building its democratic institutions, economy, and international relations.
